Help Us Bring 1,000 Urban Kids to Earth School

Posted by on Mar 26, 2012 in Earth School | 0 comments

Each year our foundation, Child Advocacy 360, selects a children’s program in the Tri-state area (NY, CT, NJ) that has shown high promise in leveling the playing field for disadvantaged and under-served children.

For 2012, and 2013, we have chosen to support The Earth School at Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center in Westchester County, New York — a nonprofit under the auspices of Something Good in the World, Inc. (SGITW), a 501(c)3 educational organization incorporated in 2002.

Our goal is to help Something Good in the World, Inc bring 1,000 urban school children to their Earth School Program at the 183-acre farm in spring, summer, and fall for the complete Earth-School-to-Farm experience of preparing the soil, composting, planting the seeds in a greenhouse, transplanting the growing plants into the farm fields, weeding and watering them, then harvesting, cooking and eating these vegetables, herbs, and fruits in the farm’s barn kitchen.

The whole experience includes getting to know pollinators such as bees, enjoying their honey, getting hands dirty by putting worms into the soil, collecting eggs from the hens and feeding the chickens and hiking into the woods to get to know the forest animals and plants that contribute to a healthy ecology, as well as to forage for berries and herbs in season. (Be sure to check out a couple of videos about Earth School at the bottom of this post.)

Now here’s our small request, along with what I hope may be an irresistible proposition:

  1. The total estimated cost for providing free educational programs and transportation to 1,000 students, plus providing their teachers with preparatory training for the workshops, and including administrative and materials costs would be $55,000 for one year.
  2. Gifts for the program from foundations and corporations to date: $15,000
  3. Needed: $40,000
  4. Child Advocacy 360 Foundation will match — dollar for dollar — up to $20,000 in gifts.

So it takes 400 gifts of $100 each to meet our goal — but if you are able, a gift of $200 or $300 would be most welcome. All gifts are fully deductible. Checks should be payable to:

Child Advocacy 360 Foundation
P.O. Box 617
Larchmont, NY 10538

(A transparency note, please — my daughter Barbara Sarbin was the founder of the SGITW nonprofit.)

SUPPORT AT THE $300 LEVEL WOULD BE WONDERFUL FOR THIS PROJECT.

Thanks for your consideration. Questions? Email HershelS@aol.com. In any case, let us hear from you. Hope all is well, and take good care.
